Weather update –south west monsoon rains-2015 yala season (Late may to early august)

The current intermittent rainy weather of evening thundershowers may likely to dissipate within a week or so typifying the end of First Inter Monsoon rains of 2015 and leaving the room to develop south west monsoon rains at the end of May.

But, almost all local, regional and global meteorological agencies have agreed that 2015 south west monsoon rains are more likely to be in the below normal window. However, usual onset time - after third week of May - will not deviate much from the normal. This forecast has a considerable weightage as two major global ocean-atmospheric phenomenon which impose significant bearing on the south west monsoon circulation of our region, namely, El Nino type circulation in the eastern Pacific ocean and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) in the Indian ocean are likely act on it negatively during this season

If south west monsoon rains are going to be weak, the inflows to the country's major reservoirs whose catchment directly lies in the Wet zone or other reservoirs in Dry and Intermediate zones with trans-basin diversions of rivers originating from Central Hills (Ex. Mahaweli Systems) may run in to a problem of continuous depleting water levels once the water issues are commenced. Even though, at present water levels of the country's major reservoirs remain at a very satisfactory level, aforesaid probable situation may lead to a danger of mid-season water scarcity. It is also pertinent to borne in mind that very high evaporative rates (6-8 mm/day) will continue to experience in the Dry and Intermediate zones during the rest of the Yala season only with some occasional showers until mid September.

Therefore, please be advised to commence the land preparation at earliest possible and complete it within a very short period of time to ensure a minimum use of available water in the tanks. Both on-farm and head-water issues should also schedule in such a way that a maximum amount water to be saved in the tank at every water issue. As in other Yala seasons, only 3 to 3.5 months age-class should be considered and by no means should present water levels of the reservoirs be considered in deciding age class of the varieties of this season.

Please note that this weather communique will be updated regularly during the rest of the season in consultation with the Met agencies.
