Seed & Planting Material Development Center (SPMDC) of Department of Agriculture (DOA) is the lead agency in the seed industry responsible for ensuring production and supply of adequate quantities of quality seed & planting material of cultivars developed by DOA.

Over the years, farmers have learnt to trust seeds and planting material produced by the DOA. In order to fulfill the above responsibility it operates several programmes through the regional centers and in the government seed production farms belongs to the division.

With the increasing demand for quality seeds, private sector was encorage to participate in seed production. With more private sector involment National Seed Policy (NSP) was diclared in 1996.

The main objective of the National Seed Policy (NSP), is to establish viable seed enterprises to facility farmers gain access to high quality seed and planting material.
