Objectives The primary objectives of the in-service training are to keep the field extension staff updated on new developments in agricultural technologies to raise their professional competence and to continue educating them to cope with changing conditions and needs in agricultural production and development.Induction training, refresher training, pre-seasonal training are the common types of trainings usually conducted at these training institutes.
Scope of Training The in-service training programmes cover topics ranging from production of a wide range of crops to specialization in water management, micro irrigation, controlled environmental agriculture, extension methodology, hydroponics, communication, integrated pest management, use of computers, accounting, personnel administration, post harvest technology, flower and ornamental plant production and so on.
At the same time, through these in-service training programmes, research is made aware of the practical problems faced by the farmers so that the research programmes become more relevant and farmer oriented.These training programmes are conducted at in-service training institutes.These institutes are situated closer to the research institutes and regional agricultural research and development centres so that the flow of information from and to research is facilitated.
These facilities are frequently used to conduct the departmental seminars, conferences and workshops.Other government departments and non-government organizations also train their staff at these training institutes utilizing the resource personnel and other facilities of the in-service training institutes.
Training programmes are arranged at the beginning of each quarter in consultation with the extension and research staff and the training schedule is circulated among the units of the department of agriculture to facilitate participation.
