| Appointment of a new Director General for Agriculture |
Mr.K.G. Sriyapala a class one officer of the Sri Lanka Agriculture Service was appointed as Director General of Agriculture. Before appointing to this post he served as Director of Extension and Training Division and then served as first Additional Director General for Agriculture Services.He was first recruited as subject matter specialist in 1980 to the Agriculture Department and worked at In Service Training Centre, Mahailluppallama in the field of crop water management. His works help to disseminate the technical knowledge to the agriculture related officers around the country. In 1986 he became an Assistant Director of Agriculture of this division and contributed to develop the institute through introducing several broad technical training programmes. In addition to that he obtained his two and half year Master of Science degree in crop science at Loss Bonus Government University, Philippine in 1989 and after that worked as Assistant Director of Agriculture for Dambulla zone and Deputy Director of Agriculture (Extension) , Kandy. Later from 1995 he took responsibilities as Assistant Director of Agriculture, In Service Training Centre at Gannoruwa which is a national level training centre. While he was working he played a main role in organizing several special workshops, local and foreign training programmes and conferences. After that from 2002 to 2011 he served as a principle at Kundasale Diploma School and provided leadership to create more than 1500 quality recognized diploma holders to the country. In this period he took measures to develop physical resources of the Agriculture School by spending more than 9 million rupees. In 2011 he appointed as Director for Extension and Training Division and in 2012 became the first Additional Director General of Agriculture (Agriculture Services). In future he planned to implement agriculture extension services efficiently through a new gateway, develop farm divisions intent to fulfill the local seed requirement, improve the research section to innovate new varieties and to introduce new research methods, take actions to obtain quality services from the officers and workers, implement rules and regulations of the Department of Agriculture in systematic and efficient way, through a integrated approach develop agriculture and introduce new technologies appropriate to the centenary. |
