What is the 2006/2007-Maha season Paddy Purchasing Procedure?
Paddy purchasing programme of the government for 2006/2007-Maha Season has been launched by Sri Lanka Agriculture products Marketing Authority (SLAPMA) from 1st week of March 2007. The programme can be summarized as follows.
  • This programme coordinates paddy farmers, authorized agents, regional stores under SLAPMA and banks.
  • Paddy stocks from the farmers are purchased fix rate of Rs. 17.50 per kilo for 'Samba' and Rs. 16.50 per kilo for other paddy varieties
  • Paddy stocks, which fulfill the standards required, are only being purchased under this programme.
  • According to the basis of 1000 kg paddy per acre, maximum of 2500kg will be purchased from each farmer. However the maximum amount purchasing of paddy per farmer could be decided by the district agriculture committee and per purchasing zone according to the area specific for excess yield, marketing problems, disasters and also the funds allocated and infrastructures facilities.
  • Authorized agents are appointed in different provincial zones.
  • Farmer organizations, farmer companies, co-operative societies, private paddy millers, paddy stock collectors and those who have interest or ability to purchase paddy can be authorized agents.     
  • Payments will be made to the farmers from the nearest branch of the Bank of Ceylon after submitting the paddy stocks to SLAPMA warehouses by Authorized agents.
  • An allowance for Transport and a commission will be paid to the authorized agents for proceeding paddy stocks from the farmers to the SLAPMA warehouses.
  • In addition to the paddy stocks collecting from farmers and proceeding to SLAPMA warehouses, purchasing paddy stocked are expected from all authorized agents and storing additional of for promoting farmer entrepreneurship purchasing as per a national service to the farmer community.        
  • Implementation of the paddy purchasing programmes and will be reviewed at the District Agriculture Committees and Divisional Agriculture Committees.

Controlling Leaf curling complex in Chilli?
  • Thrips, Mites, Aphids and/or white flies could be causal agents.
  •  Integrated pest management approach is the best way to control
  • Mite -  use 'S' (Sulphur) containing pesticides
  • White fly/Thrips/Aphids - Use pesticides which includes Imidacloprid
  • Cultivate crops in recommended season
  • Using fertilizer which contains low amount of Nitrogen 'N'

Melon fly in Bitter gourd, Snake gourd, and Luffa
  • Rake up the soil under the plants to destroy the pupae
  • Collect and destroy the rotten fruits.
  • Collect infested fruits into black polythene bags and tie it up and place under the sun
  • Bagging fruits with polyethylene covers.
  • Spray Fenthion 50% EC 1050 - 1400 ml/ha 16ml / 10 liter water from the time of flowering. Mix 25g of sugar per liter of spray mix.
  • Crop rotation
  • Use more organic fertilizer to the cultivation
  • Use 2g of 3% Carbofuran to every hole at the time of seeding
  • Use a trap with Methyl Iuginol for the control of male fly.

    • Planting materials Should be free from Banana Stem Weevil attacks
    • Treating planting materials with a liquid mixture of cow dung, ash and Carbofuran
    • Keep good sanitation
    • Keep banana Stems (distance of 2x2) in the field (Cut face should touch the earth)
    • Spread 5g of Carbofuran in between two parts of banana stems (3½"- 4" in thickness) as traps (20-30 traps for 1ha)

    Virus Diseases in Papaya

    • Remove and destroy all fallen pieces of leaves.
    • Spray Dimethoate at 30 ml in 10 l water at the time when damage is first observed.

    • Correct identification of the insect is important (4 mm in size)
    • Spray pesticide (Dimethoate 30 ml/10 l water) to branches of the infected tree)

    • Heat a solution of 1 ml Ethral and 1 l water to 52o c
    • Dip mangoes (covered with net gony bags) in the solution (should not contact mangoes with the bottom of the container)
    • Then properly wipe out the remaining solution from mangoes and keep them in a tightly covered cardboard box for 3 days

    • Spray a solution of 4 g of Sulphur with 1 l of water using a sprayer to plants
    • Apply a solution of 2g of chlorothalonil with 1g of water
