The major oilseed crops cultivated in Sri Lanka
are groundnut (Arachis hypogaea) and sesame (Sesamum indicum),
while sunflower (Helianthus anus) and mustard (Brassica juncia)
are recognized as minor oilseed crops on the basis of the extent cultivated.
In view of their high nutritional value and multiplicity of uses, they
have become an important component in dry zone farming systems.
Present yield levels of oilseed crops are low due to a variety of factors
among which are inadequate input use, adoption of inappropriate crop management
practices and pests and diseases. New varieties of oilseed crops released
recently should bring about a change in the productivity of these crops.
