Protection Centre (SCPPC)
Mandate
This center was established in 1997 with six important units under its
control. It has a mandate to plan, implement and monitor at the national
level, the amount and the quality of seed and planting materials that
are available to farmers. Fulfilling the agricultural regulatory obligations
in respect of quality assurance of seeds and planting materials, plant
protection, plant quarantine and pesticide control is another important
task of the SCPPC. Issues related to the conservation of plant genetic
resources are also come under its purview.
Institutional Organization
1. Seed certification service (SCS)
Ascertaining the supply of quality seeds and planting materials through
certification of all varieties of local and imported seeds and planting
materials is the major task of SCS. Testing of new varieties on Distinctness,
Uniformity and Stability prior to release, mother plant selection and
registration of perennial crops are also come within the SCS scope .
2. Plant protection Service (PPS)
Promotion of environmentally suitable and economically viable agricultural
pest and disease management is dealt by PPS.
3. Plant Quarantine Service (PQS)
Fulfilling the quarantine and phytosanitary requirements of imported and
exported Plant material including seeds. This provides facilities for
safe movement of germ-plasm and biotechnological agricultural products.
4. Plant Genetic Resource Center (PGRC)
Collection, conservation, evaluation, documentation and distribution of
plant genetic resources are the main activities under PGRC.
5. Registrar of Pesticides (ROP)
Registration, Evaluation and monitoring of pesticide imports, distribution
and dealer registration comes under ROP.
