Activities of the HORDI 

The activities of HORDI in respect of horticulture crops are changed in three lines such as ;

1.    Research and development
2.    Services
3.    Technology transfer

The Research and Development activities are carried out in on-Station and on-farm.  The on-Station Research Programme is conducted by several divisions, namely, Fruits, Vegetables, Root and Tuber Crops, Floriculture, Entomology, Pathology, Chemistry, Tissue culture, Adaptive Research, Extension and Training, Biometry and Database Management. The Food research unit is responsible for Post-harvest Processing and Product Development and Natural Resources Center work for Management of Natural Resources. Moreover, collaboration among researchers in different divisions to form multidisciplinary teams is common to carry out certain research projects. The emphasis in on-farm research programme is to perform technology adaptation experiments in farmer fields and to conduct National Co-ordinate variety evaluation experiments in different agro-ecological regions in the country.

The Services of the Institute are: Soil Test based fertilizer recommendations, Production of breeder’s seeds of recommended varieties, supply of planting materials, on-farm and laboratory diagnosis of pest and diseases and recommend control measures; provide library facilities, biometrical assistance, & statistics and information on horticulture crops for interested parties.

The extension and Training Division of the Department of Agriculture of Sri Lanka has the responsibility of disseminating developed technology to farmers. Therefore, the division of extension & training in HORDI is only facilitates technology transfer.  The activities in this regard are: conduct training classes, field days, exhibitions, Radio and TV programs, workshops, seminars and, produce leaflets and brochures.
