Agricultural Extension

The normal extension programme of the division covers all the food crops while the inflow of NAPP funds have strengthened extension considerably in several selected crops and activities.
Extension activities are mainly confined to the Inter-provincial irrigation schemes identified under the 13th amendment to the constitution and are located in Ampara, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura, Hambantota, Moneragala and Kandy (Minipe) districts. These areas are mainly under rice during both seasons and covers nearly 30% of the asweddumized paddy extent in Sri Lanka. The highlands are mostly under permanent crops. Other field crops are cultivated in the paddy lands during water scarce situations.
Apart from inter-provincial agricultural extension activities, national level activities such as Farm Women Extension, Agricultural Development, Bee Development, Extension of new technologies such as hydroponics and protected agriculture, mass media communication etc. are carried out by the division.
